Bred Females

Leonard Limousin is “Where the Bulls Are” but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten that the only source of great bulls is by having some great mothers for them. Our cow herd is rich in tradition going back 50 years of simply not allowing screw ups. If a cow isn’t doing the job, then she takes a trip to the sale barn.

No amount of show winnings, EPD status, or pedigree history will make up for non performance and function. We’ve got 10 rules of raising cattle and we don’t deviate. Cows with poor udder shape, bad attitudes, bad feet or if they ever needed assistance calving at any time in life are not welcome at Leonard Limousin.

If we decide to castrate a bull calf for any reason, his mother is gone. The point here is we only keep cows around that do the job they are supposed to do every day of their life. The result is a really outstanding and functional performance-based cow herd.

Heifer and Calf

With that knowledge you can be comfortable that purchases of bred females from Leonard Limousin & Angus will be cows that do their job for you without fail.

We tend to keep about 85% of our heifer calves back to breed each year. We sell a few as bred heifers, a few don’t get pregnant at all and the rest are slated to become a part of our herd for a long time. We do this because we have a lot of faith in our breeding program.

Because we don’t follow fads, we can be really certain that each generation of females born here are superior to the generation that produced them. But because we keep so many heifers, we do have to market about 100 of the proven problem free high performance mature cows each year.

These may be cows that produced our high selling bulls 5 years ago, but because of the rapid changes we’ve been able to make in the genetics of our cowherd (thanks to bulls like Jock, Beefmaker, Commodore, and Bullion), we know these younger replacements are ultimately even superior.

Heifer Grazing

Cattle for sale at Leonard’s are available every day, but when we sell females, we will always guarantee them to be pregnant, and you can have the full life history of each one available to you. There will be 100 bred cows and heifers for sale this fall after preg checking.

The cows will be bred to Beefmaker, LLR Commodore, LLR Combo, LLR Full Force, and LLR General Buford. There is not a set of Herd Sires in the industry with more growth than these 5 Limousin bulls. All have extreme leading edge feed efficiency genetics and big rib eyes.

At Leonards, a cow has to calve at 2yrs of age and calve unassisted her entire life or she disappears at the sale barn. We won’t trim feed on cows, if she can’t walk, she gets shipped. We won’t deal with a cow with a bad or mis-shaped udder.

And disposition is an absolute. We’ve never had a disposition problem in the herd, and we won’t in the future. Anything that seems on edge gets gone before they cause any headaches.

We’d like to hear from established breeders who wish to up their performance game a bit with higher growth genetics and from new or beginning breeders wanting to establish themselves on day 1 with leading edge performance and function genetics.

Give us a call anytime, come visit and share a cup of coffee while we talk about the cattle business. We’ve been at this for more than 50 years and have seen a lot of things that work and a lot of things that don’t work.
